Monty lived in London, England, and was diagnosed with a congenital defective heart valve. At age 4, the dog was beginning to have serious and life-threatening heart failure. His veterinarian visited with a heart surgeon, Dr. Christopher Orton, from the teaching hospital at Colorado State University. Orton suggested bringing Monty to Colorado for open-heart surgery – something rarely done except at very specialized schools such as CSU.
