There are downsides to having a mentor who is open to letting students explore completely new research: projects could be too ambitious, or might not provide results, and so might drag on indefinitely. “I don’t believe in eight-year PhD theses,” says Karolin Luger, a structural biologist at Colorado State University in Fort Collins.
