“It gets a little bit lost in the shuffle, because there are so many different places that provide watermelon,” says Mike Bartolo, with Colorado State University’s Arkansas Valley Research Center. Top U.S. producers include Florida, Texas, California, Georgia and Arizona, according to the National Watermelon Commission. The U.S. ranks fourth in worldwide production, with 3,682 million pounds of watermelon, far outpaced by China, which produces 150,576 million pounds.
