Q fever is rarely fatal and can be treated with antibiotics. The organisms do not dry out easily and are resistant to heat and common disinfectants. People most at risk of contracting Q fever in North Colorado are those working on sheep ranches, said Tony Knight, professor of large animal medicine at Colorado State University.
