The two most widely known forecasts come from NOAA and from hurricane expert William Gray of Colorado State University. Last May, just before hurricane season began, Gray forecast 15 named storms, including eight hurricanes, for this year. NOAA called for 13.5 storms, and eight hurricanes. The season has produced a staggering 26 storms and 13 hurricanes, both records.
