How’s this for a headline? “CSU Vet Leads Wild Elephant Vasectomy Surgeries.” It seems that elephant conservation methods have been a wee bit too effective in South African nature parks and land reserves. In some parks there may be up to 7,000 elephants too many. Rather than having to cull (a euphemism for kill) entire families of Babars, Dr. Dean Hendrickson, a surgeon at Colorado State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, is leading surgical teams to perform vasectomies on dominant bulls in selected herds.
