The Colorado Climate Center at Colorado State University had a chase team in the area that couldn’t find evidence of a rotating vortex on the ground. Instead, the dramatic funnel was a big, dark mesocyclone — in other words, a spinning thunderstorm, said state climatologist Nolan Doesken.
