‘Leadership Month’ at CSU’s College of Business Culminates with The Honorable Colin L. Powell April 30

Colorado State University’s College of Business will host retired Gen. Colin L. Powell at 7 p.m. Friday, April 30, at Moby Arena on campus. Powell’s lecture will address global leadership and diplomacy.

The lecture is free and open to the public, but tickets are required. The doors to Moby Arena will open at 5:30 p.m.

Powell’s lecture is the culmination of “Leadership Month” at CSU’s College of Business. In honor and celebration of the grand opening of Rockwell Hall-West – the college’s new expansion – several renowned speakers will visit the College of Business during April, leading up to grand opening of the new expansion and Powell’s lecture on April 30.

Tickets will be available beginning at 9 a.m. Wednesday, April 14 at the Campus Box Office by calling (970) 491-4TIX or visiting www.csutix.com. The Campus Box Office, located in the Lory Student Center, is open from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Monday – Friday. There is a limit of four tickets per customer.

Gus Lee, a nationally-recognized ethicist, leadership authority and best-selling author, will speak from 4:30-5:45 p.m. on Monday, April 12 at Rockwell Hall-West in the Bohemian Auditorium, Room 116. The lecture is free and open to the public. Lee is the chair of Character Development at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the chief learning and education officer for Integware, and a leadership consultant to Fortune 500 companies, government and law enforcement agencies, and business schools. He has been a corporate senior executive vice president, chief operating officer, government senior executive, acting deputy attorney general, senior deputy district attorney, Senate ethics investigator and FBI trainer. He has authored six best-selling books, including “Courage: The Backbone of Leadership.”

On April 17, Hernando de Soto will receive the Charles A. Lory Public Service Award at Colorado State University’s Distinguished Alumni Awards. He is sponsored by the College of Business and will receive the award for having demonstrated exceptional and sustained leadership both in his professional field and his personal commitments and for having given a significant contribution of time and talent to the university. The awards ceremony will be at 5 p.m. at the Embassy Suites in Loveland. Beginning in his native Peru, de Soto has focused on a revolutionary concept that is having repercussions throughout the world’s poor countries. He has received support and recognition from many influential political corners. Praise has come from former president Bill Clinton, former U.S. senator Bill Bradley, Nobel laureate Milton Friedman and former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. The New York Times magazine wrote, "To the leaders of poor countries, de Soto’s economic gospel is one of the most hopeful things they have heard in years." The Economist magazine has identified his Institute for Liberty and Democracy as one of the top two think tanks in the world.

On April 1, Jim Collins spoke with students, faculty and staff from CSU’s College of Business. Collins has authored or co-authored four books, including “Built to Last,” which has been on the BusinessWeek best seller list for more than six years and has been translated into 29 languages. His work has been featured in Fortune, The Wall Street Journal, BusinessWeek, Harvard Business Review and Fast Company. Collins’ book, “Good to Great” had long-running positions on the New York Times, Wall Street Journal and Business Week best seller lists, has sold three million hardcover copies since publication and has been translated into 35 languages.

The Rockwell Hall-West dedication will begin at 9 a.m. on Friday, April 30 at Rockwell Hall-West Colonnade, Southeast Entrance. The College of Business at Colorado State University has expanded its facilities to provide a 54,600-square-foot, intelligent teaching facility with smart classrooms; distance delivery control room; digital studio; wireless lounges; digital signage; team breakout rooms and study areas; a financial trading room and data lab; conference rooms and program offices; and student forums for its more than 5,000 students. The expansion has been made possible with a 10 million dollar commitment from current students and over 8 million raised in private donations and College of Business enterprise programs.

The Rockwell Hall-West open house will be held from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. on Friday, April 30. The College of Business will feature several of the departments and programs during the open house. A panel discussion concerning sustainability will be held at 1 p.m. in the Bohemian Auditorium. The panel discussion is sponsored by the College of Business’ Center for the Advancement of the Sustainable Enterprise.
